Canadian Studies Scholarship Program
The Canadian Trade Office in Taipei has been working with the International Council of Canadian Studies (ICCS) since 1991 to administer an annual research award program aimed at sending scholars to Canada for short-term research and curriculum development on Canadian Studies.
The Canadian Studies Scholarship awards, worth up to Cdn $5,500 (approx. NT$140,000), are designed to encourage Taiwan university and college professors to learn more about Canada through primary research, and to develop Canadian studies courses for inclusion in curricula at Taiwan universities. Specific priorities on research areas may change from year to year, but all topics except for purely scientific, engineering, or technical subjects are eligible. Applicants must be full-time, permanent teaching members of a recognized university, and proficient in English or French.
The awards are divided into two categories - the Faculty Research program (FRP) and the Faculty Enrichment Program (FEP) .
The FRP program is designed to allow scholars to conduct short-term research about Canada The purpose is to increase knowledge and understanding of Canada through publication abroad of pertinent articles in the scholarly press. More information on the FRP program can be found here .
The FEP award enables academic award holders to go to Canada and gather the necessary information and material to develop a new course on Canada , or to modify or extend significantly the Canadian component of an existing course. More information on the FEP program can be found here .
Past winners of the Canadian Studies Scholarship have focussed on a wide range of topics during the past 14 years, and have come to reflect the diverse nature of Canadian expertise in areas such as health care, welfare and immigration issues, labour-management relations, the telecommunications industry, multiculturalism, fisheries, language and education policy, and multilateral diplomacy, to name just a few. As of 2004, the CTOT has awarded the scholarship to 87 scholars in Taiwan.
Application procedures and forms are included below. Generally, the deadline for application is in mid-December, for awards tenable between April and February of the following year. The scholarship funds are specifically designed to pay for airfare, regional travel and living expenses for upto four weeks in Canada , although the amount awarded to each successful applicant may differ according to the scope of work described and the scrutiny of the ICCS.
