1. Do I need a Study Permit?

If you are going to study in Canada for more than six (6) months, you need a study permit. Applicants going to study in any field in Canada for six (6) months or less do not require a Study Permit and can be processed as visitors. However, this applies only if the full course is six months or less. You cannot go to Canada for the first six months without a study permit and then obtain a Study Permit while in Canada. If you intend to study in the province of Quebec, you also need a Certificate of Acceptance (CAQ) from the Quebec government. For more details see: www.immigration-quebec.gouv.qc.ca/en/index.asp

2. What are the requirements for a Study Permit?

The complete application consists of:

a) (1)Application forms Print a copy of the Application for a Study Permit Made Outside of Canada (IMM1294) found here and
(2)The Family Composition Form (IMM1294 sup) found here and complete the application forms.
b) Proof of acceptance The original and a photocopy of the letter of acceptance from the educational institution.
c) Non-refundable processing fee. Click here for details.
d) Financial support: Evidence that you can support yourself while you study in Canada. Such evidence may include: bank statements in Taiwan or Canada in your name or the name of your parents, proof of payment of tuition and residence fees, proof of scholarship.
e) Passport: Your passport and a completed return slip for Taiwan Post's SpeedPost.
f) Minor Students: If you are under 18 years of age and you plan to study in Canada, you require a notarized statement by your parents appointing a Canadian citizen or a Canadian permanent resident to act as your custodian and a notarized statement by the Canadian citizen or Canadian permanent resident who will act as your custodian. If the signatures of both parents are not available, you must provide a written explanation including documentation from the Courts if the parents are divorced or separated.

5. How long does it take to process a Study Permit application?

Normally a minimum of 10 working days is required to process a completed Study Permit application once it has been submitted to this office. We would strongly advise students to apply at least one month or more before the date their classes begin in Canada. More information about processing times, can be found at

6. Will I need to have a medical examination?

If you intend to spend more than 6 months in Canada, you will have to pass a medical examination. In this case, you will be issued a medical form with instructions after you submit copy of your Passport Biodata Page in person at our office. Please click here for a list of designated medical practitioners in Taiwan where you can complete your medical examination.  If you require a medical examination, this should be done at least 4 weeks before the commencement date of your course.

7. How much money will I need during my studies in Canada?

If you will not receive funding from a Canadian educational institution or a governmental organization, you will be required to provide evidence that you or your family can readily afford the cost of an education in Canada on an ongoing basis. You must demonstrate that you will have enough money during your stay in Canada to pay for tuition fees, books, living expenses for yourself and any accompanying dependents, and return transportation for both yourself and your dependents.

According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada guidelines, you will require approximately $10 000 Canadian per year, not including tuition fees, to cover your living expenses. If your dependants are planning to accompany or join you, you will require an additional $4000 for the first dependant, and $3000 for each subsequent dependant, in addition to return airfare.

8 . I plan to study in Canada for less than six months? What do I need to do?

If you are planning to attend a course of six months or less duration, you will require a Temporary Resident Visa only. Please click here for details.

Please bring with you to Canada the letter of acceptance issued by the educational institution in Canada where you will be studying for examination by an immigration official when you arrive at a Canadian port of entry.

After the completion of the course, you are not allowed to continue to attend another school in Canada and must leave Canada in order to make your application for a Study Permit at a Visa Office. If you are considering continuing your studies in Canada after your short-term course finishes, we strongly urge you to apply for a Study Permit before arriving in Canada.

9. I know that I do not need a Study Permit if my course is less than six months. If I want to continue my course in Canada for another term after I finish my short course, what do I do?

After the completion of the course, you are not allowed to continue to attend another school in Canada and must leave Canada in order to make your application for a Study Permit at a Visa Office. If you are considering continuing your studies in Canada after your short-term course finishes, we strongly urge you to apply for a Study Permit before arriving in Canada.

10. I am visiting Taiwan and I have a valid Study Permit but my Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) has expired. Do I need to apply for a new TRV?

Yes, if you have a Canadian Study Permit valid for your next term in Canada, but your Canadian Temporary Resident Visa has expired, you will require a Temporary Resident Visa to re-enter Canada. Please note that the validity date of your Canadian Temporary Resident Visa cannot exceed the validity date of your Canadian Study Permit or your passport.

11. I plan to return to Canada to continue my studies but my Study Permit has expired. What do I do?

If you are a returning student and do not have a Canadian Study permit for the next school term, you must apply for a new Study Permit. Please click here for details.

In this situation, the processing time for a Study Permit is normally less than two weeks

14. Can I send my Study Permit application to the CTOT Visa Section to be processed while I stay in Canada?

No, if you are currently living in Canada, you must apply to the Case Processing Centre in Vegreville (CPC-V) for an extension to your Study Permit. 15. May I work while I am studying in Canada?

Yes, if you meet certain criteria, you may be able to work while you study in Canada.

On April 22nd, 2008, Citizenship and Immigration Canada announced that foreign students in Canada can work off campus if they meet certain eligibility requirements. CIC is now accepting applications for work permits under the Off-Campus Work Permit Program. 16. If my application is refused, will the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei help me to get back money paid to the school in Canada?

No. The Visa Section is not able to assist with the refund of school fees.

17. I am the parent of a child who will be studying in Canada. I plan to accompany my child to study in Canada. Do I need to sign the notarized “Custodian Declaration – Custodian” by a Canadian citizen or Canadian permanent resident?

No, you do not need to sign the Custodian Declaration forms. This form only applies if when a child under the age of 19 is NOT living with a parent in Canada. If you plan to accompany your child while he or she studies in Canada, you will need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa. If it is likely that you will be in Canada for more than six months, accompanying your child, you will be asked to complete a medical examination before you leave Taiwan. Please note: A parent planning to accompany a minor student in Canada should apply for a TRV as soon as possible to allow sufficient time for the parent to complete medical exam. (6~8 weeks)

18. How long can I stay in Canada after I finish my course of studies?

The time will vary from person to person. To extend or vary the conditions of your temporary resident visa, you may check the CIC website at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/menu-inside.asp. See Question 19 below if you are interested in staying and working in Canada after graduation.

19. Can I work in Canada after I finish my course of studies?


It is possible to work in Canada post-graduation. To see if you qualify for this program, you may check the CIC website at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-postgrad.asp.

20. On the bottom of my study permit it says "This does not authorize re-entry". What does that mean?

It means that the permit does not give the holder any right to enter Canada and that the holder may still be examined by an officer at a port of entry. For Taiwanese passport holders, it is important that you have a valid Temporary Resident Visa as well as a Study Permit in order to be allowed to enter Canada.

21. I have decided to change schools after receiving my study permit approval letter from the Canadian Trade office in Taipei. Do I have to apply for a new study permit?

If your program of study is at the post-secondary level, you do not need to re-apply. But if you are a primary or secondary school student changing schools, you need to apply for a new study permit.Please click here for details.

22. I have completed my medical check, but have not received my results from the hospital.  What should I do?

Once you have completed your medical exam, you may go ahead and submit your Study Permit application to the office. You will not receive your medical results directly. Your medical results will be sent directly from the hospital to our CIC medical office. For more information please click here.
