International Experience Canada

Welcome to the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei’s website for International Experience Canada (IEC)! Canada’s IEC initiative in Taiwan eases the process for Taiwanese youth between the ages of 18-35 to come to Canada to improve their knowledge of Canada’s languages, culture and society, through a travel, life, and work experience. We invite you to review our IEC website to see whether you are eligible to participate in this exciting new initiative!

IMPORTANT NOTICE JULY 28, 2010: CTOT increases 2010 International Experience Canada (Youth Mobility) quota

The Canadian Trade Office in Taipei (CTOT) is pleased to announce that the quota for the 2010 International Experience Canada (Youth Mobility) program has now been increased from 200 to 700.

How are quota increases obtained?

Canada’s Youth Mobility program is based on reciprocity.  Therefore, both jurisdictions must first agree to raise their respective quotas before any increase can be put into effect.  Taiwan and Canada agreed to a quota increase of 500 on July 26.

Why is there a quota increase now?

The quota increase was obtained by the CTOT as a special measure to accommodate the over 550 Taiwanese youth who submitted applications on July 1.  Therefore, all individuals who submitted valid applications post-marked on July 1 will be offered the opportunity to participate in the program.

Is the CTOT accepting applications again?

We are not accepting new applications at this time – our priority is to process the applications that were received on July 1.  However, to celebrate the opening of the CTOT’s new home in Taiwan, we are planning to accept applications to use-up the remainder of the 2010 quota by end-September.   Note that we expect there to be a limited number (less than 200) of positions available.

Please consult this web site regularly for updates to the IEC program.

IMPORTANT NOTICE JULY 23, 2010: International Experience Canada Special Quota Increase

On July 1 the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei (CTOT) received in excess of 500 applications for the International Experience Canada program.  This far exceeded our initial allotment of 200 and we were forced to close admission that day.  We regret the delay in informing you of the status of your application.
However, due to the overwhelming interest expressed by applicants from Taiwan, we are pleased to announce that the CTOT has just been given an additional special quota increase.
This means that all valid applications post marked on July 1 will now be processed. Provided you application is not rejected on technical or other grounds, you should receive a notice confirming your participation in the coming weeks.  Please be patient as we process the additional applications.

Once again, we thank you for your interest in the International Experience Canada program and would like to extend to you our warmest welcome to Canada.
Note:  The CTOT will be moving on August 19 and will re-open for business on August 24.  Please follow this link for more details.

IMPORTANT NOTICE  JULY 1 2010 :  We have received more than 200 applications post-marked July 1. We will therefore not be able to accept any applications sent after July 1. Any applications post-marked after July 1 will be returned to sender, unopened. To ensure fairness, we will be doing a draw next week to select the 200 applications that we will review. All applicants who sent their applications on July 1st will be placed in the draw. We will notify everyone (successful and unsuccessful) who sent in their application on July 1 the status of their application by mid-July. Please do not contact us during this period.

For persons interested in applying to the International Experience Canada initiative, our next quota will likely be open in January 2011. For further information, please check back on this website in the fall of 2010. We thank you for your interest in the International Experience Canada initiative.

This website provides information you will need to prepare your application to submit to the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei. Interested applicants can apply under one of three IEC categories: Working Holiday, International Co-op and Young Professionals. If you are interested in applying for the IEC initiative, your first step is to read the IEC categories listed below and decide which category is of interest to you.

Working Holiday

This category applies to applicants ages 18-35 who intend to travel and work in Canada. It is the ideal formula for both students and non-students who want to explore Canada while being able to work to supplement their financial resources. Participants under this category will generally receive an open work permit that is valid for one-year.

International Co-op

This category offers an exciting opportunity for students ages 18-35 in a Co-op program at their post-secondary institution in Taiwan who want to gain international work experience in Canada. This category applies to students who intend to complete a pre-arranged internship or work placement related to their field of study. To be eligible, applicants must provide a letter of offer from a Canadian employer and an official document proving registration at a Taiwanese post-secondary institution. Participants in this category will receive an employer-specific work permit valid for the length of employment as per their letter of offer, for up to one year.

Young Professionals

This category applies to applicants ages 18-35 who intend to gain an international work experience related to their professional line of work under a pre-arranged contract of employment in Canada. To be eligible, applicants must provide a letter of offer from their Canadian employer. Participants in this category will receive an employer-specific work permit valid for the length of employment as per their letter of offer, for up to one year.

Please note: Canadian citizens wishing to benefit from the Youth Mobility Arrangement signed between the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada may consult the website of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada.
