January 17, 2016 - Taipei, Taiwan - Global Affairs Canada

The Canadian Trade Office in Taipei today released the following statement regarding the Taiwanese elections:

“Canada wishes to congratulate the people of Taiwan on exercising their democratic right and holding their presidential and legislative elections.

“Taiwanese and Canadians share similar values with regard to democracy, freedom and human rights. We have supported the ongoing development of Taiwan’s democratic institutions over the years and welcome the election of Taiwan’s first female president, Tsai Ing-wen. Canada looks forward to deepening its long-standing trade and people-to-people ties with Taiwan.

“It is Canada’s hope that relations between Taiwan and China will continue to be constructive and that cross-strait peace and stability is maintained, with peaceful dialogue continuing among the respective parties on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.”
